2010 – and no bugs in sight

It’s ten years since the Millennium!  All that fuss about computers crashing and bugs happen a DECADE ago!!  It really doesn’t feel like that long; however here are some facts about 2000 just in case you’ve forgotten:

The highest grossing box office film was Mission Impossible II, followed by Gladiator.

Speaking of Gladiator, it won Best Film at the Oscars, with Russell Crowe winning the Oscar for Best Actor.  Julia Roberts won Best Actress for Erin Brockovich.

It was a strange year for music, as pop was still leading – S Club 7 and Steps still going, plus a certain popstarlet called Britney Spears had recently become a household name.  This was the year Eminem began his assault on the charts with The Real Slim Shady.  It was the first time most people had heard of a singer called Dido, who featured in Stan by Eminem.  She later went on to bore the pants off most of us with her over-popular and dreary collection of reed-thin vocals.

UK number 1’s included:

  • Madonna – Music
  • All Saints – Pure Shores
  • U2 – Beautiful Day
  • Britney Spears – Oops I Did It Again
  • Spiller – Groovejet
  • Robbie Williams – Rock DJ
  • Kylie Minogue – Spinning Around
  • Oasis – Go Let It Out

Celebrity Deaths in 2000:

  • Alec Guinness (Obi Wan in Star Wars)
  • Barbara Cartland
  • Lolo Ferrari (famous for having the largest breasts in history)
  • Walter Mattheu
  • Paula Yates (responsible for spawning ‘celebrity’ brat Peaches Geldolf)

And in history:

  • The closest presidential fight ever between Al Gore and the most idiotic man who ever lived, George W. Bush.
  • Mapping of the human genome for the first time.
  • Russian submarine, the Kursk, sank.  The public was horrified by reports that crew may still remain alive for a while below the sea.

Meanwhile the mobile phone had taken off, with most of us now owning a mobile phone.  Mine was a particularly lovely (and huge) Nokia, which reflected the light and turned different colours.  I loved that phone!  Until someone stole it out of my bag one day in Bella Pasta 😦

This year we’re looking forward to the following film releases:

  • The Book of Eli
  • The Lovely Bones
  • Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland
  • The A-Team
  • Clash of the Titans

and in music, new albums include…

  • Vampire Weekend
  • MGMT
  • Kings of Leon
  • Outkast
  • Hot Chip
  • Massive Attack
  • REM
  • Lightspeed Champion
  • The White Stripes (?) – live album
  • Goldfrapp
  • Arcade Fire
  • Justice
  • Kraftwerk
  • Klaxons
  • NERD
  • Mystery Jets

Glastonbury’s 40th anniversary, plus, the return (cross fingers!) of one of the best festivals i’ve been to in recent years – Hydro Connect, cancelled last year due to the recession.

Happy 2010 everyone!!!
